Mauna Loa Lookout

Visit Mauna Loa Lookout on the Big Island for views toward Kīlauea, a koa forest drive and the start of the Mauna Loa Trail.

Mauna Loa Lookout sits at 6,662 feet at the end of Mauna Loa Road, west of Volcano Village on the Big Island. The viewpoint looks toward Kīlauea, not directly at Mauna Loa, and on a clear day you can see old lava flows and the ocean. An octagonal pavilion, information signs, picnic table and restroom make it a place to pause before exploring. The Mauna Loa Trail starts here, with an 18-mile route toward the summit. The drive climbs through koa forest on a winding, narrow road.

Views toward Kīlauea

Mauna Loa Lookout

The lookout is at 6,662 feet, at the end of Mauna Loa Road. Despite its name, the view is toward Kīlauea rather than directly at Mauna Loa. From the viewpoint, you can look toward the Kīlauea caldera and old lava flows. On a clear day, the ocean is visible in the distance. Clouds and rain can block the view, so conditions on the day matter.

The drive is part of the visit. Mauna Loa Road climbs through koa forest, where birds can be heard among the trees. The route is winding and narrows to one lane in places. Some curves have limited visibility, so take care around oncoming traffic.

The pavilion and trailhead

At the top, an octagonal pavilion provides shelter beside the viewpoint. Information signs explain the area, and a picnic table and restroom are available. The lookout is also the starting point for the Mauna Loa Trail, an 18-mile ascent toward the summit. You can begin the route here, but the full trail is a substantial backcountry hike, not a short walk from the car.

The lookout is regarded as a sacred site. Take time at the viewpoint quietly and treat the place with care. If you plan to continue onto trails, check the route and access conditions before setting out.

Planning the drive

Allow time for a slow drive up and back. The road has blind bends and narrow sections, so daylight is useful for seeing the route and taking in the forest. Higher elevation can bring cooler temperatures; pack a layer even if it is warm lower down.

The viewpoint can still be a worthwhile pause when clouds hide Kīlauea: the pavilion, signs and forest setting remain to explore. For a clear caldera view, though, weather is decisive. Keep expectations focused on Kīlauea, since Mauna Loa itself is not the volcano framed by the lookout.
