Punta del Este is a resort town on the Atlantic coast of Uruguay, in Maldonado department, about 130 km east of Montevideo. The town sits on a peninsula with a beach on each side: Playa Mansa, calm and sheltered on the bay side, and Playa Brava, open to the ocean with bigger surf. Visitors come for the beaches, the marina, and the restaurants and nightlife that fill up in summer. Two well-known sights are the large hand sculpture rising from the sand on Playa Brava and Casapueblo, a whitewashed hotel and art complex on Punta Ballena, west of the center.
The town suits beach holidays, nightlife, and travelers who want a resort with good seafood and shopping. Summer, from December to February, is the peak season, when the beaches are busiest and prices rise. Outside summer the town is quieter, and many restaurants and hotels reduce hours or close, so check before you go. Two or three nights covers the beaches and a day trip. A week suits a slower pace.

How do you get from Montevideo to Punta del Este?
By bus from Montevideo's Tres Cruces terminal in about 2 hours. Summer traffic on the highway adds time in both directions.

Yes if you want beaches, seafood and a lively summer scene. It is expensive in high season and many shops and restaurants close out of season, so choose your dates to match what you want.
How many days do you need in Punta del Este?
Two or three nights cover both main beaches, the harbor and a boat trip to Isla de Lobos. Add a day if you want a day trip to Montevideo or Piriápolis.
When is the best time to visit Punta del Este?
March and November to December are warm with fewer crowds than the January and February peak. Winter from June to August is quiet, and many businesses close.
Can you visit Punta del Este on a day trip from Montevideo?
Yes, but the round trip takes about 4 hours on the road alone. Staying at least one night gives you time for the beaches and the harbor in the evening.
