Colonia del Sacramento is a small city on the Río de la Plata in western Uruguay, across the river from Buenos Aires. Portuguese settlers founded it in 1680, and Portugal and Spain traded control of it several times over the next century. Its historic quarter, with cobbled streets, low whitewashed houses and remnants of the old city walls, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995.
The old town is compact enough to walk in an afternoon. Most visitors spend their time on the restored streets, the old lighthouse area, the waterfront and the Calle de los Suspiros, or Street of Sighs. The town suits a day trip from Buenos Aires or a one- or two-night stop for slow walking and café breaks. Spring and autumn, roughly September to November and March to May, bring mild weather for walking.

How do you get to Colonia del Sacramento from Buenos Aires?
By passenger ferry, about an hour by fast boat, operated by Buquebus and Colonia Express. Book a seat ahead before you travel.
Can you visit Colonia del Sacramento on a day trip?
