Manorbier Castle

Manorbier Castle stands above Manorbier Bay, close to the village of Manorbier and around six miles from Tenby. Its coastal position gives the castle striking views across the beach and surrounding countryside. The site began as an earth-and-timber fortification, established by the Norman de Barri family. Stone buildings followed, with much of the surviving castle associated with the early medieval period.

The castle was the birthplace of Gerald of Wales, also known as Giraldus Cambrensis, a writer and scholar born in 1146. He later wrote about his travels through Wales alongside Archbishop Baldwin of Canterbury. The castle remained with the de Barri family until 1359, then passed through several owners. It became crown property in the late 15th century and was sold by Elizabeth I in 1603, when it was recorded as being in poor condition. The castle was restored in the 19th century.

Towers, rooms and gardens

The surviving masonry includes sections of the walls, a gatehouse and towers. Inside, the open inner area and garden give the castle a different feel from its defensive exterior. You can explore at your own pace, moving between the remains and the planted grounds. Historical information around the site adds context to the rooms and structures.

The tower stairways are steep, and some routes through the castle are narrow. Take care on the steps and choose footwear with a good grip. The castle is not especially large, but its rooms, garden and viewpoints provide several things to explore. Children can follow pirate-themed activities, and life-size figures are also used around the castle and grounds.

Pair the visit with the beach

Manorbier Beach is a short walk from the castle, making it easy to combine the two stops. The sandy bay sits beneath the castle and is also a starting point for walks along the coast. A car park near the beach serves the area; allow enough time on your parking stay if you plan to visit both the castle and shore.

The castle café makes a handy pause during the visit, with coffee and sausage rolls among the choices noted. Dogs need to remain downstairs while you explore the castle. If you are planning a visit with a dog, factor that restriction into your route.
