Sharjah is a port city on the Persian Gulf and the capital of the Emirate of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. Known as the UAE’s cultural capital, it has museums devoted to archaeology, science, art and Islamic culture, traditional markets and restored historic streets. The Blue Souq, also called the Central Souq, has around 600 shops and overlooks Khalid Lagoon. The Heart of Sharjah is a long-running restoration of the old city centre that includes the covered Souk Al Arsa. Sharjah Fort, built in 1823, reopened as an open-air museum in 2015.

Plan time for the museums and heritage district, then choose from canal-side attractions, green spaces and family stops such as Sharjah National Park. Sharjah suits travellers interested in culture and architecture, families, and anyone combining a UAE visit with Dubai. The city is part of the Dubai-Sharjah-Ajman metropolitan area. Winter is more comfortable for outdoor visits. Summer days average 38-42 °C and can exceed 45 °C in July and August. Sharjah has strict alcohol rules: alcohol may be sold or consumed only with a licence, and hotels and restaurants do not serve it.
