Providenciales, known locally as Provo, is an island in the Turks and Caicos Islands, a British Overseas Territory. It is the territory’s most developed destination for visitors, with most resorts near Grace Bay. The beach stretches about 5 mi (8 km), and luxury condominiums line parts of its shore. Visitors can also take boat trips to nearby uninhabited cays or book a whale-watching trip during humpback migration season.
Long Bay Beach is on the island’s southern, windward coast, where steady winds draw kiteboarders. Southwest of Downtown, Chalk Sound National Park is a bay about 3 mi (5 km) long, dotted with small islets. The island’s western half is mostly wilderness, with scrub-covered hills and ridges. Providenciales International Airport is the main arrival point. There is no public transportation, so plan to use a rental car, taxi or arranged transfer to get around. The Leeward Highway runs east to west between Downtown and Leeward, near many shops and services.
