Konye-Urgench

Konye-Urgench

Go for the brick minaret and tile-decorated mausoleums of a former Khwarazm capital, reached on a day trip from Dashoguz.

Konye-Urgench is an ancient city in northwestern Turkmenistan, near the town of Köneürgenç in Dashoguz Province. It was once the capital of the Khwarazm state, and its brick and glazed tile monuments stand on flat land near the Amu Darya river. The tallest landmark is the Kutlug Timur minaret. Nearby are the mausoleums of Turabek Khanum and Sultan Tekesh, decorated with carved brick and blue-glazed tile.

It suits travelers who want archaeology and early Central Asian architecture, and who are comfortable with a remote site and limited services. Dashoguz, the largest city nearby, is the usual base, and most trips to the ruins take a half day to a full day. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, since summer heat here is intense. Visa and transport arrangements take the most planning, so start early.
