Neuchâtel is the capital of the Swiss canton of the same name, on the northwestern shore of Lake Neuchâtel in French-speaking Switzerland. Its name means 'new castle'. The Old Town sits on a hill reached by the steep Rue du Château, while the lower town runs along the lake. The Collégiale, a landmark of early Gothic style, has a large rose window on its west front. The castle beside it still houses the cantonal government offices and is not open as a sight.
The Musée d'Art et d'Histoire displays three Jaquet-Droz automata, and the Musée d'ethnographie is known internationally for its African collections. Two days cover the Old Town, the main museums and a lake walk. Trains connect the city to Bern, Lausanne, Zürich and Geneva. The nearest international airports are Geneva, about 122 km southwest, and Bern, 73 km southeast. July averages 20.1 °C, so summer suits lakeside walks.
Neuchâtel in five
- Walk the lake, old town and castle in orderSwitzerland Tourism suggests the Jeunes-Rives park and Quai Osterwald, then Place Pury and the market square, then up to the castle and collegiate church for views of the town and lake.
- Ride the Chaumont funicular for Jura viewsChaumont, the local mountain, has a panorama tower reached by funicular and is a starting point for Jura hikes. It is the easiest way to see the lake from above without a long climb.
- Hike the Areuse Gorge one wayFrom Noiraigue a trail runs through the Areuse Gorge to Boudry, where a tram returns to Neuchâtel. Walk it downhill and take the tram back instead of retracing your steps.
- Add Creux du Van as a day from NoiraigueTake the train to Noiraigue and walk up to the rock arena. The loop, its length and the season are in the Jura Mountains guide, and the official advice is to use public transport because parking at the rim is limited. The Jura Mountains
- Take a boat to Estavayer-le-LacA boat trip crosses the lake to Estavayer-le-Lac and its Grande Cariçaie nature reserve on the south shore. Check the season and timetable before you plan a day around it.

Is Neuchâtel worth visiting?
Yes, for a small lake town with a castle, an old town of ochre-colored buildings and the Jura close by. It is quieter than Lausanne or Geneva and suits a day or two on a western Switzerland loop.
How many days do you need in Neuchâtel?
One day covers the old town, castle and lakefront. Add a second for Chaumont, a boat trip or the Areuse Gorge, and a third for Creux du Van.
How do you get to Creux du Van from Neuchâtel?
Go to Noiraigue and start the walk from the village, or reach the Restaurant du Soliat by car or bus, from where the rim is a few minutes' walk. The loop length and season are in the Jura Mountains guide.
When is the best time to visit Neuchâtel?
May to October for the lake, vineyards and Jura trails. Winter is quiet, and many Jura paths are not accessible.
What can you do on Lake Neuchâtel?
Switzerland Tourism lists swimming, rowing, sailing, stand-up paddle boarding and bike tours, plus boat trips to Estavayer-le-Lac. Check boat seasons and swimming-area rules before you go.
