Uppsala lies in the Uppland region of Sweden, about 70 km north of Stockholm and roughly 40 minutes away by train. It is the capital of Uppsala County and Sweden's fourth-largest city. The historic quarter sits on the west bank of the Fyris river, where the cathedral, the castle and most university buildings stand close together.

Uppsala University, founded in 1477, is the oldest center of higher education in Scandinavia. Uppsala Cathedral, a Gothic brick church inaugurated in 1435, is the largest church in Scandinavia, and Carl Linnaeus is buried inside. His former house and garden can still be visited. Gamla Uppsala, about 5 km north, has huge royal burial mounds from before Christianity. Summer, from mid-May to late September, has the longest days, while winter runs from late November to mid-March. A day trip covers the cathedral, the university and Gamla Uppsala, and an overnight stay leaves time for the gardens.
