Tangalle is a coastal town on Sri Lanka's south coast, in Hambantota District of the Southern Province. Fishing boats work the wide sandy beach, and daily life moves more slowly than in the busier resort towns to the west. Visitors mostly come for the beaches and simple seafood. Many use the town as a base for the south coast, reached by road from Galle.
Choose Tangalle for several unhurried days by the water, with time for swimming, long meals and short drives inland. Yala National Park, known for leopards and elephants, is within reach for a safari. The sea is calmest from December to March. From May to September the southwest monsoon brings rough seas, so check conditions before planning beach days. Two to three nights covers the beaches and a day trip. Add a Yala safari and plan four to five nights.
