Matara is a city on Sri Lanka's south coast, in the Southern Province, and the southern end of the Coastal Line railway from Colombo. Most of it is a working town, with a daily market, shops, a river mouth and an old fort. Many travelers pass through by train or road on the way to beaches farther along the coast, so the town often feels like a stop on the way.
Most visitors come for Dondra Point, a short ride out of town, where a lighthouse stands near the island's southernmost tip. Mirissa, the best-known beach village on this stretch, is a short ride east. Matara suits travelers who want an ordinary town as a base and are happy to reach the beaches on day trips. Plan on one or two days. November to April is the drier season on this coast, which makes the walk around the fort and the beaches more comfortable.

Is Matara worth visiting?
As a stop, yes: it is a real working city with markets and transport, and it opens the road to Dondra Point and the east. As a destination, most travelers prefer a beach village such as Mirissa and treat Matara as a half day.
Matara or Mirissa: where should you stay?
Stay in Mirissa for the beach, whale-watching boats and a relaxed evening, and in Matara if you need services, a transport hub or a stop on the way east. The two are a short ride apart, so a day in Matara is easy from the bay.
How do you get from Matara to Bundala?
By road east along the south coast: hire a driver or take buses toward Tissamaharama and Hambantota, then a vehicle to the park. Check times locally, and reserve the park permit through the DWC system if you plan to enter.
Is there a train to Matara?
Yes, the coastal railway line serves the south coast. Check Sri Lanka Railways for current services, stay inside the carriage while the train moves, and keep your bag close, as the FCDO advises.
Can you see whales from Matara?
Dondra Point, close to Matara, is one of the two locations Sri Lanka Tourism lists for whales, and its trips connect with Galle, Hikkaduwa and Mirissa. Boats gather at Mirissa harbor, so most visitors book there.
