Ella is a village in the hill country of Sri Lanka's Badulla District, at roughly 1,000 meters above sea level. Tea estates climb the slopes around it, and the village sits in a valley with hills on every side. Most visitors come to walk: Little Adam's Peak and Ella Rock both start close to the village.

The Nine Arch Bridge, a curved railway viaduct on the Kandy to Badulla line, is a short walk from town. Many travelers take the Kandy train for the scenery and then spend their days on foot in the tea hills. Ella suits anyone who wants slow days, walks and cool air more than beaches or nightlife. The drier months, roughly December to April, are better for walking than the monsoon season. Two or three nights leaves room for a couple of walks, the bridge and a train ride.

Ella FAQ

How many days do I need in Ella?

Two or three. One for Little Adam's Peak and Nine Arch Bridge, one for Ella Rock or a tea factory.

Is Ella Rock hard?

It is a steeper, longer hike than Little Adam's Peak, about 4 hours round trip. Start early and take water.

When is the best time to visit Ella?

February, March and June to August tend to be driest. October to December brings more rain to the hills.

Is the Kandy to Ella train worth it?

Yes if you can get a reserved seat and accept delays: it climbs through tea country and is the reason many people come. If seats are gone, a driver with stops at viewpoints gives much of the same scenery.

How do I get from Ella to the south coast?

By road, usually via a driver or a bus change, and plan most of a day. There is no direct train to Galle, so check current bus and driver options and leave slack before a flight.
