Sitges is a coastal town about 35 km southwest of Barcelona in Catalonia, set between the Garraf Massif and the Mediterranean Sea. It has about 17 sand beaches, and nine of them hold Blue Flag awards. Beach days are the main draw, but the historic core and its museums are worth a few hours. The painter Santiago Rusiñol settled here in the late 19th century, and his former studio is now the Cau Ferrat Museum.
Sitges is also a major destination for LGBTQ+ travelers, with many gay-friendly hotels, bars and restaurants, and its busiest season runs from May to September. The calendar includes Carnival in February or March, Sitges Pride in June and the International Fantastic Film Festival in October. The town has its own railway station, and Barcelona-El Prat airport is close by. Plan at least one night if you want to see the town after dark, and a full day if you want to cover both the beaches and the museums.

- Walk the seafront, then the old townThe promenade links a string of small beaches and the church on the point. The old town behind it is the better place for dinner and a quiet evening.
- Pair it with Tarragona, not GironaTarragona lies further down the same coast, with Roman ruins. Girona and the Costa Brava need another day and a different line.Tarragona

Read the guideSitges FAQ
Is Sitges worth visiting?
Yes, for a beach day or a night close to Barcelona. The old town, the seafront church and the sea are the draws, and it is much calmer than the city.
How do you get from Barcelona to Sitges?
Take the Rodalies R2 Sud train from Sants, about 30–45 minutes. Drivers face summer traffic and paid parking, so the train is simpler.
Is Sitges good for a day trip?
Yes. A morning swim, lunch in the old town and an evening train back covers the best of it. Stay a night if you want the festival atmosphere.
When is the best time to visit Sitges?
May to September for beach weather. February or March for Carnival, October for the film festival and June for Pride, each with higher prices.
Is Sitges a good base for Barcelona?
It works if you prefer a calm evening and a train commute, and want more beach time. If you want nightlife and sights, stay in the city.
