Buen Pastor Cathedral is the main Catholic church in San Sebastián, a neo-Gothic building completed in 1897. It stands on a square reached from calle Loiola, on the route from the Paseo de La Concha into the centre. Its spire, about 75 meters tall, can be seen from most of the city, which makes the building easy to find. Inside, the stained glass, chapel icons, sculptures, paintings and a large organ reward a slow walk. Entry is free, so the visit fits into a stroll between the beach and the old town.
Construction and design

Work on the cathedral began in 1889, and the building was completed in 1897. The architect was Manuel de Echave, a Basque architect who designed it in the Gothic revival style. The design recalls medieval churches in Germany and France.
The church is built of sandstone from nearby Monte Igueldo. Its tower, which rises over the entrance portico to 75 meters, was finished in 1899, after the main body of the building. The steeple was therefore a later addition.
The building received the title of cathedral in 1953. It is the seat of the Suffragan Diocese of San Sebastián, under the Archdiocese of Pamplona y Tudela, and it is the largest church in Gipuzkoa.
Inside the cathedral

The plan follows a Latin cross and has three naves. Stained glass windows fill the walls, and on sunny afternoons the light falls across the floor. The chapels hold icons, and sculptures and paintings appear throughout the interior.
The organ is one of the church's main features. When it is played, the sound fills the nave, and the stone helps carry it through the building.
People come here to pray, light a candle or sit quietly. Members of the Spanish royal family have visited the cathedral several times.
Planning a visit
Entry is free. The main entrance is on the square reached from calle Loiola. Work on the street in front can make the approach awkward, so walk around the side of the building to get in.
The entrance and the parking area are wheelchair accessible, and a side ramp serves visitors with strollers or limited mobility.
The Basilica de Santa María del Coro stands opposite the cathedral, so the two can be seen together. The Gipuzkoa Square is not far away. For a quieter visit, go in the early afternoon outside the busiest season. Late-afternoon sunlight comes through the stained glass windows.
