Salamanca is a city in Castile and León, in western-central Spain, on the Tormes river. It sits about 800 meters above sea level on the northern Meseta plateau. Its Old City has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, and many of its historic buildings are made of golden Villamayor sandstone, which gives the old center its warm color.

The University of Salamanca, founded in 1218, is the oldest university still active in Spain, and the city draws many foreign students for Spanish courses in summer. The Plaza Mayor, a Baroque square completed in 1729, is the main square, and the Old and New Cathedrals meet at the small Patio Chico nearby. Winters are cold with frequent frosts and summers are hot, so spring and autumn suit walks through the old town best. Salamanca Airport, about 14 km east, has only seasonal routes, to Palma de Mallorca. Trains from Vialia-Estación de Salamanca run often to Madrid and Valladolid, and the city lies about 121 km from Valladolid by road.

Salamanca in five

  1. Stay one night to see the Plaza Mayor after darkThe arcaded square is at its best in the evening, when the stone glows and students fill the terraces. A day trip from Madrid misses it.
  2. Find the frog on the university facadeA small carved frog hides in the ornate facade of the old university. Finding it is a local tradition, and gives you a reason to study the stonework.
  3. See both cathedrals in one visitThe Old and New Cathedrals stand side by side and connect inside. Check opening hours and joint ticket options on the cathedral's official site before you plan the day.
  4. Eat in the student streets, not just the squareBars on the side streets serve cheaper tapas and local cured meats than the arcades. Order a drink and ask what comes with it.
  5. Add Ávila or Valladolid for a longer Castile tripBoth are within about 1.5 hours and make a quiet extension to a Madrid trip.Ávila

Salamanca FAQ

Is Salamanca worth visiting?

Yes, especially for the Plaza Mayor, the cathedrals and the old university. It is a compact city that works well as an overnight from Madrid or a stop on a Castile loop.

How many days do you need in Salamanca?

One full day covers the square, cathedrals and university. Two days lets you add museums, a slower evening and a half-day trip. A day trip from Madrid is possible but rushed.

Can you visit Salamanca as a day trip from Madrid?

Yes, by bus or train in roughly 1.5–2.5 hours each way. You see the sights, but miss the evening glow on the square, which is the best part.

What is the best time to visit Salamanca?

April, May, September and October are mild. July and August are hot, and winter is cold with clear days. Term time keeps the bars lively from autumn to spring.

Is Salamanca good for a first trip to Spain?

As an add-on, yes. It is smaller and calmer than Madrid, Seville or Barcelona, and gives a different view of Spain's history. It is less suited to beaches or nightlife.
