Puerta de Alcalá

See Puerta de Alcalá, Madrid’s neoclassical city gate from 1778, and study its sculpted details before continuing to nearby Retiro Park.

Puerta de Alcalá is an 18th-century neoclassical city gate in Plaza de la Independencia, beside Retiro Park. Designed by Francesco Sabatini and completed in 1778 for King Charles III, it once marked an entrance to Madrid on the road to Alcalá de Henares. Walk around the plaza to see its sculpted stonework from different angles, then continue into the park. The arch is especially suited to a photo stop, and its lighting gives it a different look after dark.

A royal entrance to Madrid

Puerta de Alcalá stands in Plaza de la Independencia, where Calle de Alcalá, Calle de Serrano and Calle de Alfonso XII meet. It was one of five royal gates that gave access to Madrid. Its name comes from the road leading towards Alcalá de Henares.

King Charles III commissioned a new entrance after arriving in Madrid in 1759 and finding the existing gate unsatisfactory. Italian architect Francesco Sabatini designed the replacement. Construction took place between 1769 and 1778, and the monument was inaugurated in 1778. It served as a principal entrance to the city for years.

Stonework and design

The gate is built from granite in a neoclassical style, with Corinthian columns, sculpted figures, masks and reliefs. Its monumental form draws on the shape of a triumphal arch. It is regarded as the first such arch built in Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire, and as a precursor to later arches such as those in Paris and Berlin.

Look at both sides as you walk around the plaza. The east and west façades differ in design, a result of Sabatini presenting two sketches for the project. The sculptural details are easier to notice when you pause and view the monument from more than one direction.

The plaza and Retiro Park

The gate occupies the centre of a large traffic circle in Plaza de la Independencia. This setting gives you room to view it against the surrounding streets, though traffic separates the monument from the edges of the plaza. The arch is a familiar subject for photographs, whether you frame the full structure or focus on its carved details.

Retiro Park is just behind the gate, so the monument can mark the start of a longer walk. The park includes the Palacio de Cristal, the Monument to Alfonso XII and a lake where people gather on Sunday afternoons. The gate is illuminated after dark; early morning and late night are also suggested times for quieter photographs.
