Faro de la Mola

Faro de la Mola, Formentera's 1861 lighthouse on the island's highest cliffs. See the sea views, plan the walk and time your visit for sunrise or sunset.

Faro de la Mola is a lighthouse on cliffs about 120 metres above the Mediterranean, at the eastern end of Formentera and on the island's highest point. It dates from 1861 and still runs every night. The tower itself is not open to climb, so most of the visit happens outside: at the cliff edge, by the monument to Jules Verne, and in the view over the sea. Come for sunrise or sunset, and bring water and good shoes for the walk, because there is no shade.

Faro de la Mola

Faro de la Mola was built in 1861, during the reign of Isabel II, and it was the first lighthouse put up on Formentera. The architect and engineer Emili Pou y Bonet designed it.

The light has run every night since it opened, lighting the waters to help prevent shipwrecks. Today the tower is closed to visitors, so the experience is built around the outside: the cliffs, the sea and the sky.

The Jules Verne monument

A monument to the French novelist Jules Verne stands beside the lighthouse. He placed the spot in his novel Hector Servadac, which is why the site has a literary link as well as a view.

The monument makes a short stop before you walk to the cliff edge. From there you can look out over the sea and watch the light change with the time of day.

Getting there and what to eat

The lighthouse sits at the eastern end of the island, along a long road that runs from the village. Parking lots are close to the site, so a car is the simplest way to arrive. Many people find the road itself part of the trip.

The last stretch on foot is about 2 miles, with no shade. A cafe stands next to the lighthouse, and a bar is at the end of the road. If you want to sit on the rocks, bring your own snacks and drinks and enjoy the view from there.

The walk is about 2 miles, and there is no shade along the way. Wear good walking shoes and bring water, and avoid the hottest part of the day.

Can you drive to Faro de la Mola?
