Cuenca is a city and the capital of Cuenca province in Castilla-La Mancha, central Spain. Its old town sits on a narrow rocky spur above the gorges of the Júcar and Huécar rivers, which gave the city its nickname, the Eagle's Nest. The walled old town and both gorges have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. The best-known sight is the Casas Colgadas, the hanging houses built over the Huécar gorge, which are the city's emblem. The Gothic cathedral was begun in the 12th century and is one of Spain's earliest Gothic cathedrals.

From Madrid, high-speed trains take about 50 minutes to Cuenca-Fernando Zóbel station, about 5 km from the centre. A day trip works, but a night lets you walk the old town after the day visitors leave. The old town stands about 1,000 m above sea level, so nights stay cool; bring layers. Spring and autumn are short, with pleasant days and cold nights. Summers are hot and dry. The old town is steep, so expect climbs.

Cuenca in five

  1. Take the fast train, then a city busThe high-speed station sits outside the old town, so allow time for a city bus or taxi up the hill. Check the current Madrid timetable before you plan a day trip.
  2. Walk the Casas Colgadas firstThe hanging houses are the postcard view. Walk down to the gorge-side paths and cross the pedestrian bridge for the best angle.
  3. See the abstract art museumThe Museo de Arte Abstracto Español sits inside the Casas Colgadas. Check the opening days before you plan around it.
  4. Pair it with the Ciudad EncantadaThe rock formations of the Ciudad Encantada are a short drive away and need a car or a tour. Decide before you arrive.
  5. Compare Cuenca with CáceresBoth are walled hill towns with a medieval core. Cuenca has the gorge and the hanging houses; Cáceres has the larger heritage quarter.Cáceres

Cuenca FAQ

Is Cuenca worth visiting?

Yes if you like dramatic old towns. The hanging houses, river gorges and tight lanes make it distinctive, and the fast train from Madrid keeps it accessible.

How many days do you need in Cuenca?

One day covers the old town, the Casas Colgadas and the gorge paths. Stay a night for the Ciudad Encantada or a slower evening in the old town.

Can you visit Cuenca as a day trip from Madrid?

Yes. The fast train takes about 1 hour each way, but you need to add a bus up to the old town. Start early and check the last train back.

Is Cuenca or Toledo better?

Toledo has more monuments and crowds. Cuenca is quieter, with a gorge-side setting and a more relaxed feel. Both work as day trips from Madrid.

When is the best time to visit Cuenca?

Spring and autumn for mild days. Summers are hot, and winters can be cold and quiet. Holy Week brings processions and crowds.
