Torre del Clavero

See Torre del Clavero in Salamanca, a 15th-century Gothic tower with an octagonal top, small turrets and coats of arms, viewed from the street.

Torre del Clavero is a 15th-century Gothic tower at C. Consuelo, 34, in Salamanca. Once part of Don Francisco de Sotomayor’s palace, it is now used as a government office and is not open to the public. Its square base changes to an eight-sided upper section, with small turrets, coats of arms and blind arches to inspect from outside. Stop by while walking through Salamanca’s historic streets, especially if you enjoy medieval architecture or want a distinctive photo subject.

A palace tower in Salamanca

Torre del Clavero

Torre del Clavero was built in the second half of the 15th century as part of the palace of Don Francisco de Sotomayor. The palace has not survived, leaving the tower as a remnant of the complex. Its name refers to Sotomayor’s title of Clavero Mayor, an office associated with responsibility for the keys and archives of his order.

The tower is about 28 metres high. Its sturdy square base gives way to an eight-sided upper section, with a small cylindrical turret at each corner. Coats of arms and blind arches add detail to the masonry. The tower is now used as a government office, so visitors cannot go inside or climb to the top.
