Most of the exhibition text is in Spanish, so a translation app can help you get more from the displays if you do not read the language.
Unamuno’s exile on Fuerteventura
Miguel de Unamuno arrived on Fuerteventura in 1924 after the dictator Primo de Rivera removed him from his teaching responsibilities and sent him into exile. Unamuno had been vice-chancellor rector of the University of Salamanca and was a prominent member of Spain’s Generation of ’98. He spent more than five months on the island before leaving for Paris.
The period also shaped his writing. He worked on pieces connected with Fuerteventura and gathered local expressions, language variations and Majorero vocabulary. The displays introduce visitors to his time on the island and the political and academic circumstances behind it.
The house and its displays
The museum occupies the home where Unamuno stayed. Everyday objects and furnishings remain in the rooms, giving the exhibition a domestic setting as it traces the writer’s connection with Fuerteventura. Floor directions help you follow the visit through the house.
The displays are concise and focus on Unamuno’s life and the events surrounding his exile. Most of the text is in Spanish, so visitors who do not read it can use a translation app to access more of the information. Admission is free.
