Parc del Laberint d'Horta

Explore Barcelona’s historic Horta garden, from its cypress maze and mythological sculptures to the terraces, fountains and quiet picnic spots.

In Barcelona’s Horta-Guinardó district, Parc del Laberint d’Horta is a historic garden known for its cypress maze and quiet paths. The oldest garden in the city, it combines an 18th-century neoclassical layout with a 19th-century romantic garden across three terraces. Follow the paths past fountains, ponds and sculptures of Greek mythological figures, then try to find your way through the hedge labyrinth. It’s a good choice for a gentle walk or a family picnic away from central Barcelona. Some areas have been affected by construction work.

A garden made for wandering

Parc del Laberint d’Horta is in the Horta-Guinardó district, away from central Barcelona. Work on the garden began in the late 18th century, when it belonged to the Desvalls family estate. The park opened to the public in 1971 and is considered Barcelona’s oldest historic garden.

Its design brings together two styles. The neoclassical garden dates to the 18th century, while a romantic garden was added in the 19th. Rather than one continuous level, the grounds rise across three terraces. Paths, planted areas and water features make the visit as much about strolling between sections as reaching the maze.

The maze and the three terraces

The cypress hedge labyrinth is the park’s best-known feature, on the lower terrace. Its paths twist between tall, closely trimmed hedges, with a statue of Eros at the centre. Take your time as you navigate the turns, then look back at the layout from the surrounding garden paths.

The middle terrace has a lookout and Italian-style temples, with sculptures of Danaë and Artemis and Tuscan columns. On the upper level stands the neoclassical Pavilion of Charles IV. Across the terraces, sculptures draw on Greek mythology; figures including Dionysus and Danaë appear among the garden’s works. Ponds, fountains and other water features add interest along the route, though some areas have been affected by construction work.

A former estate, now a public park

The garden was designed for the Desvalls family estate, with the Italian architect Domenico Bagutti associated with its original design. The romantic section developed later in the 19th century, when additions included gazebos, flowerbeds and a waterfall. The family mansion is also part of the historic estate.

Today, visitors come to explore the garden’s formal layout, follow its paths and spend time outdoors. Families can make the maze part of a visit with children, while picnic tables and green spaces make a longer stop possible. If a picnic is on your plan, bring your own food and water. Before you go, check whether work is affecting access to any section you particularly want to see.
