Boseong is a rural county in South Jeolla Province, on South Korea's southwest coast. It is best known for its green tea plantations, where rows of bushes climb the hillsides in neat, curving terraces. The largest estate, Daehan Dawon, is the one many visitors picture when they hear the name.

Boseong suits a slow, outdoor trip. Spend part of a day walking the tea fields, then head to the coast for the sea, a beach walk and seafood in the fishing villages. One or two nights covers the tea and the coast without rushing. Spring, when the tea bushes are young and bright green, is the season to aim for, though the fields look good in other months too. Gwangju, the nearest major city, is the usual starting point, and buses from its terminal are the simplest way to reach town.

    Boseong FAQ

    Is Boseong worth visiting?

Yes for the green tea fields, the walks between the rows and a quiet town. It has fewer sights than Gwangju or Suncheon, so it suits a slow trip.

How do you get to Boseong?

By bus from Gwangju Bus Terminal, or by car from Suncheon or Yeosu. Check bus times on Naver Map or KakaoMap before you go, since the timetable changes.

Can you visit Boseong on a day trip?

Yes from Gwangju or Suncheon, but the trip is long for a short visit. A day covers the tea fields and the town; a night lets you walk the fields early and late.

Do you need a car in Boseong?

Not for the town, but a car or taxi makes the tea fields and the beach easier. Buses reach the town, so check routes to each place before you set out.

When is the best time to see the tea fields?

April and May, when the tea is picked and the fields are at their greenest. October is also dry and clear, and summer brings the rainy season.
