Maribor is Slovenia's second-largest city, in the northeast of the country on the Drava River. It is the main city of the traditional region of Lower Styria, and it sits between the Pohorje mountains to the south, the Kozjak hills to the west and the Slovenske gorice hills to the east. Vineyards cover many nearby slopes. Its best-known sight is Stara trta, the Old Vine at the Hiša stare trte house in the Lent district, which Guinness records as the world's oldest grapevine.

Maribor suits a trip built around wine, old town walks and the Pohorje hills. Maribor Cathedral is a 13th-century Gothic church, and the Old Bridge over the Drava dates from 1913. The old town is largely pedestrian. The Lent Festival, usually held in June, brings theatre, opera, ballet and music, and it is one of Europe's largest outdoor festivals. Summers are warm, and the city is one of Slovenia's sunniest, with about 266 sunny days a year.
