Košice is the largest city in eastern Slovakia and Slovakia’s second-largest city after Bratislava. It sits on the Hornád River, near the Hungarian border and the Slovak Ore Mountains. The historic center is the country’s largest urban conservation reserve. Its 1,200-meter pedestrian Main Street, Hlavná ulica, passes palaces, cafés and restaurants. St. Elizabeth Cathedral, a 14th-century Gothic building, is Slovakia’s largest church. Nearby are the Gothic St. Michael Chapel and the Urban Tower, still used as a bell tower. Medieval fortification remains and the former prison at Miklušova väznica add more stops in the center.
Košice suits travelers who want a walkable city break with museums, architecture and contemporary arts venues. Some cultural spaces occupy former industrial or military buildings, including Tabačka Kulturfabrik and Kasárne Kulturpark. The local cuisine draws on Slovak and Hungarian traditions. How do you get from Bratislava to Košice?
Visit Košice puts the EC and IC express at about 5 hours, and coaches also run from Bratislava several times a day. Rail works from 5 October 2026 change some timetables, so check your train in the ZSSK app.
Is Košice worth visiting?
Yes, if you want a large historic center with few crowds. It has the biggest preserved municipal area in Slovakia, a cathedral, synagogues and an old pedestrian main street, and it opens the way to the Karst.
How do you get from Košice airport to the center?
Bus 23 links the airport with the bus and railway station, about 15 minutes, running hourly on workdays and twice an hour on weekends per Visit Košice. A taxi is the alternative.
Can you visit Spiš Castle in winter?
No. The museum lists the castle as closed from December to March, open only in good weather in November and daily from April to October, with shorter hours in the shoulder months.
