Sint Eustatius, usually called Statia, is a small island in the Caribbean Netherlands, southeast of Sint Maarten. Most visitors reach it on a short flight from there. The Quill, a dormant volcano, has a hiking trail through rainforest to its crater rim. Oranjestad, the main town on the leeward coast, has Dutch colonial buildings and Fort Oranje. In the 18th century the port was a busy trading center. In November 1776 the fort fired a salute to the American brig Andrew Doria.
Diving is the other main draw, with reef sites and wrecks around the island. Hiking is best in the drier months, roughly winter into spring, since hurricane season runs from June through November. Plan three to four days to cover The Quill, the town and a few dives.
