Sandwood Bay Beach

Plan a walk to Sandwood Bay Beach near Blairmore, with golden sand, dunes and the sea stack Am Buachaille. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours each way.

Sandwood Bay is a remote beach near Blairmore, reached on foot by a clear track across open moorland. Golden sand, dunes, blue water and the sea stack Am Buachaille make the long walk worthwhile. Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours each way, and more if the car park is full. You can camp among the dunes, where late sunsets and a lingering glow in the summer night add to the sense of remoteness. There are no facilities at the beach, so bring what you need.

The walk from Blairmore

Sandwood Bay Beach
Sandwood Bay Beach

Sandwood Bay is reached by a track from Blairmore, near Kinlochbervie. The route crosses open moorland and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours each way. Much of the path is clear, but rain can leave muddy sections, and small streams may require stepping stones.

The beach is not a quick roadside stop. Leave time for the walk in both directions and for exploring once you arrive. The car park can be full at busy times; parking farther back on the approach road adds distance, so do not leave a vehicle where it blocks access.

Sand, dunes and Am Buachaille

The long approach opens onto a wide stretch of golden sand backed by dunes. At one end, the sea stack Am Buachaille rises above the shore. Blue water and the open Atlantic give the bay its distinctive, exposed setting.

There are no facilities on the beach, so bring food, water and anything else you will need for the visit. Sheep and cattle, including bulls, may be on the path. Give them room as you pass.

Camping and evening light

The dunes provide places to camp for those making an overnight trip. Sand can make tent pegs difficult to secure, so use pegs suited to sandy ground. The bay is known for its sunsets, and in summer the sky can retain a glow late into the night.

Sandwood House, a ruined building mentioned in accounts of the area, is reputed to be haunted by the ghost of a sailor from a 16th-century Spanish Armada shipwreck. Its story is tied to the remote coast, but the beach and Am Buachaille remain the main sights on a visit.
