Inverness is a city in the Scottish Highlands, in northern Scotland, and is often treated as the de facto capital of the Highlands. It stands where the River Ness enters the Moray Firth, at the north-eastern end of the Great Glen. It is also the northernmost city in the United Kingdom. The River Ness flows from Loch Ness, so the loch is a short trip from the city.
Culloden Moor lies near the city, where the 1746 battle ended the Jacobite rising; it was the last pitched battle fought in the UK. In town, walk the Ness Islands, two wooded islands joined by footbridges, and see the medieval tower of the Old High Church, the oldest surviving building in Inverness. The Victorian Market, between Union Street and Queensgate, holds many small shops. Inverness Airport is about 13 km north-east of the city, and the bus station at Farraline Park is a short walk from the railway station. Rain falls all year, so pack a waterproof.

How many days do you need in Inverness?
Two days cover the castle, the river walk, Culloden and a Loch Ness trip. Add a day for Fort George or a longer drive, and treat the city as a base for the Great Glen and the north coast.
Is Inverness worth visiting or just a base?
Both. The center is small and pleasant for one evening, but most of the value is nearby: Culloden, Clava Cairns, Urquhart Castle and the Moray Firth. Plan one night in town and the rest on the road.
Can you see Loch Ness without a car?
Partly. Historic Environment Scotland lists Urquhart Castle as reachable by public transport and points to Traveline Scotland. Winter timetables are thin, so confirm each leg before you buy tickets.
Is the Inverness Castle Experience worth it?
It suits a wet afternoon or a first orientation to Highland history, and the tower views come with the ticket. If you plan to visit Culloden and Urquhart too, the three together are a lot of paid entries.
What is the best time to visit Inverness?
May to September gives the longest days and the most open attractions. Midge season runs from May to October, mostly in the west Highlands, and bites are worst on calm, overcast mornings and evenings.
