San Marino

San Marino is a small republic on Monte Titano, a ridge surrounded by Italy, known for three medieval towers and views toward the Adriatic coast.

San Marino sits on Monte Titano, a limestone ridge in the foothills of the Apennines, a short drive inland from the Adriatic coast. Italy surrounds it on every side. The republic traditionally dates its founding to 301 AD and claims to be one of the oldest sovereign states in the world. The old town runs along the ridge, and three medieval towers, Guaita, Cesta and Montale, stand on the crest. The historic center has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.

Most visitors come for a day from Rimini. There is no train, so buses from Rimini are the usual way in, and the historic center is compact enough to walk in a few hours. Staying overnight lets you walk the lanes and ridge after the day-trip crowds leave. Italian is the official language and the euro is the currency. Spring and autumn suit walks on the walls and ridge paths, while summer is hot and busier. Give a full day to the towers and old center, or two nights for a slower pace.

Five things to know before San Marino

  1. Take the bus up from Rimini

There is no railway. Regular buses run from Rimini station up to the old town on Monte Titano in about 50 minutes.

  2. Enter under Schengen rules via Italy

There are no border checks with Italy, but you must enter the Schengen area legally first. Your 90 days in 180 count from your entry into Italy or another Schengen country. The 90/180 rule

  3. Walk the ridge between the towers early

The path between Guaita, Cesta and Montale is narrow and fills with day-trip groups from late morning in summer.

  4. Get a souvenir passport stamp at the tourist office

There is no border stamp. The tourist office in the old town sells a souvenir stamp for your passport for a small fee.

  5. Check your roaming plan covers San Marino

San Marino is not in the EU, so EU roaming rules may not apply on its own network. Phones often pick up Italian networks instead; check before you use data. Phones and eSIM
