Lake Kivu is one of the Great Lakes of Africa. It lies in the western branch of the East African Rift and is shared by Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Rwandan shore has two main towns, Rubavu (formerly Gisenyi) and Karongi (formerly Kibuye), both on the water.

Go for swimming, kayaking and boat rides to the islands. The lake suits a slow trip, and it works as a stop between Kigali and the western border or as a few quiet days after busier parts of Rwanda. Rubavu is roughly three hours by road from Kigali. Karongi is smaller and quieter, which suits a longer stay. June to September and December to February are the drier months and the easiest for time outdoors. Plan at least two or three nights so you see more than the first town.
