Mikhailovsky Garden

Mikhailovsky Garden sits in central St Petersburg, beside the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood and behind the Russian Museum. Its location makes it easy to combine a walk through the grounds with either landmark. The nearby Mikhailovsky Palace is now part of the Russian Museum complex.

The garden takes its name from Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich, son of Emperor Paul I. The palace and garden were associated with this member of the imperial family. The grounds date to the early 18th century, when the site belonged to a Swedish noble’s estate and hunting grounds. After the region came under Russian rule, the land became part of the imperial estates and was developed by Jean-Baptiste Alexandre Le Blond.

The garden brings together regular and landscape styles of design. Walk its paths among mature trees, flowers and varied vegetation, or take a seat on one of the benches. The grounds also include a pond rebuilt in 1998. Look across the canal from the café, or pause here between visits to the surrounding cultural sites.

The planting changes with the seasons: spring brings flowers, while autumn colors the foliage. The garden is free to enter and has a café and snack kiosks. It is also a place to watch birds or take a slower break with children. Visitors can bring dogs, and the site has a public restroom and a wheelchair-accessible entrance.
