Kamenny Island
Sight

Kamenny Island

Walk Kamenny Island in St Petersburg for quiet park paths, riverside pauses and a striking pair of Gothic and Art Nouveau houses.

Kamenny Island is a quiet, leafy place to walk in St Petersburg, with a park, riverbank and streets lined with houses from different periods. Look for the Gothic-style Kleinmichel dacha, built in 1904, and the Art Nouveau house on the same plot, once owned by the wife of circus proprietor Ciniselli. The island also has a Gothic church built for Emperor Paul I, which inspired verses by Pushkin. Many mansions are screened by tall fences, so come for the atmosphere and architecture from the street rather than expecting access inside.

The Gothic-style Kleinmichel dacha was built in 1904. In 1907, part of the plot was sold to the wife of circus proprietor Ciniselli, who had an Art Nouveau house built there. The two buildings make the site unusual: distinct styles share one plot, though fences can make them difficult to see clearly from the street.

The story of Countess Kleinmichel’s departure during the revolution is tied to another house she owned, on Tchaikovsky Street. She put up a notice saying she had been arrested and was being held in the Peter and Paul Fortress, sealed the house and removed her possessions. The house was believed empty only later. She did not manage to take anything from the dacha.

The Gothic church and its literary connection

Kamenny Island

A Gothic church on Kamenny Island was built for Emperor Paul I. Prominent residents of St Petersburg worshipped there, and Alexander Pushkin devoted a cycle of verses to it. Its Gothic design offers a different architectural stop from the island’s houses.

The island’s appeal also lies in the spaces between its buildings. Paths through the park and quiet streets lead toward the river, where kayakers pass. In autumn, foliage turns golden; in warmer weather, small beach spots provide places to sit.
