The Republic of the Congo, also called Congo-Brazzaville, is a Central African country on the Equator with a short Atlantic coastline. It is not the same country as the DR Congo, so check the name on flight bookings and visa forms. Brazzaville, the capital, lies on the Congo River, which gives the country its name. Pointe-Noire on the coast is the economic capital and the center of oil activity.
Go for Brazzaville's colonial-era buildings, which are being restored, and the Basilica of Sainte-Anne, completed in 2011. The Odzala-Kokoua forest massif in the north, a UNESCO natural World Heritage Site listed in 2023, is one of the places where western lowland gorillas live. Tourism is limited. Facilities are few outside Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire, many sites are hard to reach, and roads and communications are patchy. Plan for slow travel and aim for the dry season, which runs from June to August in most of the country.
Five things to know before Republic of Congo
- Get your visa before you fly
British visitors need a visa issued in advance through a Congolese embassy, and the UK advice lists no visa on arrival. Other passports should check the rule with the embassy. UK entry rules
- Carry yellow fever and polio certificates
Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required, and the UK advice also lists a polio vaccination certificate. Keep both with your passport.
- Book rainforest parks well ahead
Odzala-Kokoua and Nouabalé-Ndoki are remote, reached mainly by charter flight or long road and river trips. Gorilla tracking is arranged through the park operators.
- Travel in the June to September dry season
The long dry season makes roads and forest trails easier. Rains are heaviest from about October to May.
- Carry Central African CFA francs
The XAF used here is not the same as the West African franc. Cards work in few places outside big hotels in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire.

Republic of Congo FAQ
Do I need a visa for the Republic of Congo?
British visitors do, and it must be issued in advance by a Congolese embassy. Other passports should check the rule with the embassy before booking.
What is the difference between the two Congos?
The Republic of Congo has its capital in Brazzaville. The Democratic Republic of Congo, across the river, is a separate and much larger country with its capital in Kinshasa and its own visa rules.
Can I see gorillas in the Republic of Congo?
Yes. Western lowland gorillas live in Odzala-Kokoua and Nouabalé-Ndoki. Tracking is arranged through the parks and is best booked as part of a planned trip.
When is the best time to visit?
June to September, the long dry season. Forest parks can be visited at other times, but rain makes access harder.
Do I need vaccinations for the Republic of Congo?
Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry, and the UK advice also lists a polio certificate. Ask a travel clinic about malaria prevention too.
