Vila Nova de Milfontes is a small town in the Odemira municipality, in the Alentejo region of southwest Portugal. It sits on the western Atlantic coast, on the north bank of the Mira River estuary. King John II founded the town in 1485 for trade and defense, and its sheltered spot at the river mouth made it a safe harbor. Pirate raids hit the village repeatedly, and Fort São Clemente, built between 1599 and 1602, was meant to protect it.
The town lies inside the Nature Park of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast, and the Mira River estuary shelters many bird species and marine life. Nearby beaches, including Malhão, Furnas and Foz, have white sand and clear water, and surfers come too. The woods around the town are home to wild boar and foxes. The population swells in summer and holiday periods, while outside peak season the town stays small and quiet, with 5,653 residents in 2021.

- Respect the walking-only rule on private landRota Vicentina says paths cross public and private land, and owners allow passage on foot only. Stay on the marked route, close gates and keep bikes and vehicles off walking trails.
- Pick river beach or ocean beach for the dayThe river mouth gives calmer water for children, while open beaches have waves and wind. Check conditions locally, and swim where there is a lifeguard in season.
- Rent a car if you plan to move onPublic transport along the south-west coast is limited, so a car helps if you want to link towns or reach other beaches. A walking-only trip works with planned bus links.Trains and cars in Portugal
