Odeceixe is a small village in the Faro district, on the western edge of the Algarve where it meets the Alentejo. The beach sits at the mouth of the Seixe River, and the village rises up the slope above it. The coast here belongs to the Costa Vicentina, with cliffs, dunes and open Atlantic beaches.

Go if you want a walk, a surf or a quiet beach base. The Fishermen's Trail, part of the Rota Vicentina network, runs along this coast, and one stage links Odeceixe with Zambujeira do Mar. Summer brings the most visitors and the warmest water, while spring and early autumn are quieter. Plan at least two days for the beach, the village and one walk, and longer if you want more of the trail. Reaching other beaches on the coast is easier with a car.

Odeceixe in five

  1. Walk the Zambujeira stage only if you are fitRota Vicentina lists Zambujeira do Mar to Odeceixe as stage 5 of the Fishermen's Trail, 18.7 km and about 5 hours 40 minutes, graded difficult. It ends with a view of Odeceixe beach from Ponta em Branco.
  2. Choose the river beach or the sea beachThe beach sits where the Seixe river meets the Atlantic, so you can swim in calmer river water or the surf. Check flags and tides, and keep out of the water when the swell is high.
  3. Check the stage status before you walkRota Vicentina has posted closures and marked alternatives on parts of this section, so read its current notices before setting out. Carry water, because there is little shade.
  4. Bring a car for the next beachesVillages and beaches along this coast are spread out and buses are limited. A car makes Aljezur and Carrapateira easy, while the village itself is walkable.Costa Vicentina guide
  5. Book ahead for the walking seasonsSpring and autumn are the main trail months, and small guesthouses fill early. Reserve before you set a trail date.Aljezur travel guide

Odeceixe FAQ

Is Odeceixe worth visiting?

Yes for a quiet village, a river-mouth beach and a trail stage on the Fishermen's Trail. It is not a resort, so skip it if you want a big choice of restaurants and nightlife.

How long is the Zambujeira to Odeceixe stage?

Rota Vicentina lists it as stage 5 of the Fishermen's Trail, 18.7 km and about 5 hours 40 minutes, graded difficult. Check the trail's current notices, because parts have been closed and rerouted.

Is Odeceixe in the Algarve or the Alentejo?

The Seixe river marks the boundary, and Odeceixe sits on the Algarve side. The coast to the north belongs to the Alentejo, and the trail crosses between them.

Can you swim at Odeceixe beach?

Yes in the right conditions. The river side is calmer and the sea side has waves, so check flags, tides and swell before you go in. Lifeguard cover varies by season.

Do you need a car in Odeceixe?

For the village and beach, no. For other beaches and trailheads, yes, because buses are limited. Many walkers use luggage transfers and taxis on the trail.
