Évora is a walled city in the Alentejo region of southern Portugal, about 140 km from Lisbon, and the seat of Évora District. Its old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986, and stretches of the medieval wall still surround the centre. The historic centre covers about 1.05 km² and holds roughly 4,000 buildings, with Roman, Gothic, Manueline, Renaissance and Baroque monuments placed close together. Most sights are within walking distance.

The Roman Temple, dedicated to Emperor Augustus, dates from the 1st century and is the city's best-known landmark, though it is often wrongly called the Temple of Diana. The Chapel of Bones, inside the Church of Saint Francis, has every wall decorated with human bones. Summers are hot and dry, with an average high near 30 °C and frequent heatwaves, so plan the walking for cooler hours. The megaliths lie outside town, about 10 km and 15 km away, so a night in the city leaves time to visit them.

Évora FAQ

Is Évora worth visiting?

Yes, if you want a compact walled city with Roman, medieval and Manueline sights and fewer crowds than Lisbon. It is slow rather than spectacular, and it suits travelers who enjoy squares, churches and long lunches.

Can you visit Évora as a day trip from Lisbon?

Yes. The municipality lists the train at about 1 hr 30 min and the express bus at 1 hr 30 min to 1 hr 45 min, so a long day works. A night inside the walls adds the quiet evening hours.

How much is the Chapel of Bones?

The municipality lists the combined São Francisco ticket at 5 euros for adults and 3.50 for youths to 25 and seniors over 65, with a 12.50 euro family ticket. It covers the Capela dos Ossos and the museum spaces.

When is the best time to visit Évora?

March to May and October are mild and good for walking. July and August are very hot on the open squares, so plan indoor stops in the middle of the day if you go then.

Is there a tourist tax in Évora?

Yes. The municipality charges 1.50 euros per guest per night for up to 3 consecutive nights, for guests 16 and over, in hotels and local lodging. Check your booking for how and when it is added.
