Cascais is a town and municipality on the Estoril Coast, in the Lisbon District of Portugal, on the western edge of the Tagus estuary. The Sintra mountains lie to the north and the Atlantic to the west, so the town sits between hills and open sea. The royal family spent part of each summer here from 1870 to 1908, and mansions from that era still stand in the town center and nearby areas. The Casino Estoril, one of the largest casinos in Europe, inspired Ian Fleming's first James Bond novel, Casino Royale.
Calm beaches lie to the east, while Guincho, to the northwest, draws surfers, windsurfers and kitesurfers because of its strong winds and swells. The western shoreline has cliffs and sea views, including the Boca do Inferno. Summers are warm and dry and winters are cool and wet, with temperatures rarely below 5 °C or above 30 °C. Frequent trains run from Lisbon, and the A5 highway or the coastal road called the marginal makes the drive. Cascais also works as a base for Lisbon while you stay outside the city.
Cascais in five
- Take the CP train, not a carThe CP Cascais line runs from Cais do Sodré through Belém and Oeiras to Cascais, with trains every 20 minutes at midday in the timetable checked. Parking in town is hard, so the train is simpler.Getting around Europe
- Check CP notices for works and bus replacementThe line has had night closures and bus replacement between Cais do Sodré and Algés while works finished. Look at CP's notices for your date before a late return.
- Decide between a day trip and a few nightsA day gets you the bay, the old town and a cliff walk, but a few nights give time for Guincho beach and evenings by the water. Lisbon is an easy base if you prefer city nights.Lisbon travel guide
- Pair Cascais with Sintra on a two-day loopSintra's palaces sit inland from the bay, so the two towns make a coast-to-hills pair. Book Sintra for a morning slot and keep an afternoon for the bay and the promenade.Sintra

Is Cascais worth visiting?
Yes for a coastal break from Lisbon with a bay, a walkable town and cliff views. It is a comfortable day trip or a quiet base, but not for a wild beach trip.
How do you get from Lisbon to Cascais?
By CP train from Cais do Sodré, which takes about 40 minutes with frequent trains. Check CP's notices for night works, as the line has had bus replacement at times.
How many days do you need in Cascais?
One day covers the bay, the old town and a promenade walk. Stay two or three nights if you want Guincho beach, a longer cliff walk and quiet evenings.
Is Cascais better than staying in Lisbon?
Choose Cascais for sea air and quiet evenings; choose Lisbon for restaurants, museums and neighborhoods. The train makes either base work for both.
When is the best time to visit Cascais?
May, June, September and October bring warm days and a calmer coast than July and August. Winters are mild and wet, and the beaches are for walking.
