Marinha Beach is a small beach on the Algarve coast, in the Lagoa municipality, between Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra. Golden cliffs frame the sand, and on calm days the water is clear and turquoise. Sea arches and rock stacks stand offshore, and the double arch rock is the view most photographers come for. A café sits at the entrance, and lifeguards are on duty. The Seven Hanging Valleys trail starts here and follows the cliffs east along the coast.
Where the beach is and how to reach it

Marinha Beach lies on the Atlantic coast at Caramujeira, in the Lagoa municipality. It sits about halfway between Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra. Most visitors come by car, because public transport to the beach is limited.
The beach is reached by a staircase cut into the rocks. The steps down are not too steep, but the walk from the parking area to the top of the steps is a fair distance.
The Portuguese Ministry of the Environment has awarded the beach its golden beach distinction, and the Michelin Guide has listed it among the 10 most beautiful beaches in Europe.
The beach and the cliffs

The sand is small and sits between tall golden cliffs. Sea arches and rock stacks rise from the water, and the double arch rock is the feature most visitors photograph. Set up your shot from the cliff top, where you can line up the arches with the cliffs and the greenery above.
At low tide you can walk along the sand and explore the jagged cliffs and the rock formations up close. Caves and small nooks along the shore are worth a look. Families with children can spend time in the rocky areas, where crabs and small fish live.
The Benagil cave and beach are a short distance away. Crowds gather there, so plan your time carefully if you want to visit both.
The Seven Hanging Valleys trail
The trail runs about 12 kilometres there and back, starting at Marinha Beach and heading east to Vale Centeanes beach. It follows the cliff tops and passes several viewpoints, sea caves and secluded beaches. Some walkers choose to rest and swim at Marinha before or after the hike.
If you want to avoid the car park, you can leave a car near the far end of the trail and walk back across the cliffs. The parking there also fills early in the day.
The view from the trail is often considered better than the view from the shore. Allow enough time, and bring a camera and water.
Visiting in practice
Cats live near the car park and are used to people. Keep food and bags closed, and do not feed them.
Summer is the busiest season. In early March, the beach was quieter, and the sun setting over the cliffs lit the rocks with golden light.
Pack a towel and sun cream, because there is little shade on the sand.
