MAH - Angra do Heroismo Museum

Explore Azorean history, maritime objects and artwork at the Angra do Heroísmo Museum, housed in a former convent with a historic church.

MAH, the Angra do Heroísmo Museum, occupies the former Convent of São Francisco in Angra do Heroísmo, on Terceira in the Azores. Its collections trace the islands’ history through maritime and military objects, photographs, art and everyday items. The convent’s church and cloister are part of the visit, with detailed artwork in the church. English translations and QR-code tours help you follow the exhibits at your own pace. It is a good indoor stop when rain interrupts a day exploring the city.

The museum is based in the former Convent of São Francisco, in the historic centre of Angra do Heroísmo. The building dates to the 17th century and includes a cloister and church. The museum has been housed here since 1969.

An earthquake on January 1, 1980, damaged the building. Its reconstruction allowed the convent to be adapted for museum use. The church and cloister remain important parts of the setting, alongside the galleries.

The displays cover the settlement of the Azores and Angra’s place in the archipelago, as well as military history, folk traditions, religious life and trade. The collection spans different periods, from the islands’ early history through the contemporary age.

Look for objects from many areas of daily and public life: weapons and uniforms, coins, furniture, costumes, ceramics, musical instruments and photographs. Carriages, medals, paintings, sculpture and vintage toys add further perspectives. The exhibits use photographs and interactive displays to tell the region’s story.
