In short

Pick Albufeira for a resort week close to Faro airport, a big choice of hotels, pools and nightlife. Pick Lagos for a walkable old town, cliff walks and an easier start on the west coast. Both reach the Benagil caves by licensed boat, so choose by evenings, transport and the kind of beach you like.

Albufeira or Lagos: the short answer

Choose Albufeira if you want a beach resort week with the shortest transfer from Faro airport, a large choice of hotels and apartments, pools and the Algarve's biggest nightlife. Choose Lagos if you want a walkable historic center, cliff and cove scenery and an easier start on the wild west coast. Both let you reach the Benagil caves by licensed boat, and both work for a week, so the decision rests on evenings, transport and the kind of beach you like.

The Albufeira travel guide and the Lagos travel guide describe each town in detail, and the Portugal guide shows how the Algarve fits with Lisbon and Porto.

The two bases side by side

Albufeira is the Algarve's biggest resort town. It has an old town above a fishermen's beach, a nightlife district in Oura, resort belts with big hotels and a calmer coast of red cliffs at Falésia. Lagos is smaller and more compact. It has a walled old town, a marina, a series of golden coves around the Ponta da Piedade sea stacks and a long open beach at Meia Praia. The difference is one of scale: Albufeira has more of everything, and Lagos is easier to take in on foot.

Choose Albufeira if

Albufeira is the better base if the week is about the beach, the pool and an easy setup. It is closer to Faro airport than Lagos, which matters after a long flight or a late landing, and the choice of hotels is wider, from small guesthouses in the old town to large resorts at Areias de São João and Falésia. That breadth gives you control over the budget and the noise level, and the where to stay in Albufeira guide compares the four main areas.

It is also the right base for groups and for travelers who want nightlife outside the door. The Strip in Oura is the best known late-night district on the Algarve coast, and the old town has its own bars and restaurants. Families benefit from the resort belts, where pools, kids' clubs and wide beaches make a week easy, and the municipal tax is the one cost to plan for. Albufeira's 2024 regulation sets 2 euros per night from April to October, up to 7 nights, for guests aged 13 and over, which the hotel adds to the bill.

Albufeira is the wrong choice if you dislike crowds and noise, since July and August are busy and the Strip is loud, or if you want a compact historic center without package-holiday traffic. It is also less good for the wild beaches of the west coast, which are a longer drive away. If your idea of the Algarve is empty sand and cliff paths, read the Costa Vicentina guide before booking a resort.

Choose Lagos if

Lagos is the better base if you value a walkable town. The old town is compact, with squares, restaurants and a marina, and the coves around the Ponta da Piedade sea stacks are a short ride or walk away. It has a reputation as a base for couples, walkers and travelers who want an evening stroll in the old town without a resort strip. It is also the starting point for the west coast: Aljezur and Carrapateira are closer from here than from Albufeira, so a day on the Costa Vicentina is easier. The Aljezur and Carrapateira guides show what that coast offers.

Lagos is a good fit for travelers who like trains. CP's regional timetable valid from 19 July 2026 shows Algarve line services between Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira-Ferreiras, Faro and Vila Real de Santo António, so you can reach Faro without a car. The compromise is the airport run, which is longer than the transfer to Albufeira and usually involves a taxi, a bus or the train via Faro.

Lagos is the wrong choice if you want a big resort with pools and a wide choice of all-inclusive hotels, since the supply is smaller and more town-based. It is also less suited to a short trip built around a late landing at Faro. If you want a smaller cove town closer to the caves than either, look at Carvoeiro, which sits between the two.

Benagil, caves and boats from both towns

Neither town needs to be chosen for the caves. Licensed operators run boat trips from several Algarve ports to the Benagil area, and the sea decides whether a trip runs, so keep a spare day in your plans. Landing on the inner beach is banned, as is swimming into the cave, and kayaks there need a guide.

Choose an operator that shows its license, ask what the trip includes and how long you stay in the cave area, and avoid anyone offering to land you on the sand. Prices vary by boat type and season, and cheap sunset cruises can be a different trip from a cave tour, so read what the ticket covers.

Getting there and getting around

From Faro airport, Albufeira is the shorter run, and the options are laid out in Faro airport to Albufeira. Lagos is farther, and the usual routes are a taxi, a transfer, a bus or a bus or taxi to Faro station and the Algarve line from there. If you plan to see the coast beyond your base, a car makes both towns more flexible, and a car is close to essential for the west coast. The older N125 road and the A22 motorway, which uses electronic tolls, both link the towns.

For the longer trip, getting around Europe explains where trains help and where a car does.

Which traveler are you?

Couples who want dinner in an old town and a morning walk to a cove usually do better in Lagos, because the old town and the cliff path are the main attraction and nothing needs a car. Couples who want pool days and a lively bar can be happy in Albufeira, especially in the old town, where the lanes are walkable and the beach is close. Groups of friends who plan late nights lean toward Albufeira and Oura, where apartments are plentiful and the bars are steps away.

Families split by the age of the children. With toddlers and young children, the resort belts near Albufeira make the week easy, since pools, shallow beaches and kids' clubs are close and evenings are calm away from the Strip. With older children and teenagers, Lagos is easier to enjoy: boat trips, snorkeling, walks to the sea stacks and a town with enough to do after dinner. Solo travelers and walkers often prefer Lagos for the compact old town and the cliff paths, and for its link to the Costa Vicentina trails.

Travelers who dislike package-holiday crowds should look at the shoulder months in either town, or at a smaller base. May, June, September and early October give warm days and a swimmable sea, and in those months the Strip is calmer and the Lagos coves are less crowded. July and August are busy in both.

Splitting a week between the two

A week does not have to belong to one town. A split of four nights in Albufeira and three in Lagos, or the reverse, lets you try both, at the cost of a half day of packing and a transfer. The regional train and the road both link them, though the Albufeira-Ferreiras station is inland, so you still need a bus or taxi at that end. If you split, put the base with the airport run at the end of the trip, when you are tired and want a short ride to the flight, and put the western base first if you want the Costa Vicentina on a rested day.

Splitting makes the most sense for ten days or more. In five or six nights, moving costs a morning you would rather spend on the beach, and a single base with one or two day trips by car or boat gives you most of what the other town offers. In that case, choose the base that matches your evenings and treat the other as a day out.

What to do when the weather turns

Both towns are mild in winter and wet on some days. Albufeira has more indoor options, such as restaurants and shopping, but many seasonal venues close outside summer, so check what stays open before booking a winter week. Lagos has the old town's churches, small museums and cafes within walking distance, and a wet day is a pleasant time for a long lunch. In either town, boat trips depend on the sea, so keep the spare day. For a longer bad-weather escape, Faro has an old town, a church and a bone chapel under cover.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is picking a base by a photo of a beach rather than by evenings and transport. The second is booking Albufeira's Strip for a family trip or a calm week, which is the usual source of a bad review. The third is choosing Lagos and assuming the airport is a short hop. The fourth is trying to do both bases in one week with a hotel change in the middle, which costs a morning. If you want both, spend four nights in one and three in the other, and move on a rest day.

Before you go

If you book boat trips from either town, an eSIM for Portugal lets you check the operator's sailing status and the sea forecast on the morning. Travel insurance covers a cancelled booking and medical care on a trip built around boats, sun and a rental car. When you have chosen, go to the Albufeira guide or the Lagos guide for the details.
