In short

Choose summer for the full Tatra trail network and Morskie Oko, winter for skiing, sleigh rides and cozy evenings, and September for the best odds of clear skies with open lifts. Some trail sections close from 1 December to 15 May, and the Kasprowy Wierch cable car stops for maintenance in May and November.

Zakopane in winter or summer: the short answer

Choose winter if you want snow, ski lifts, sleigh rides and cozy wooden interiors, and you are comfortable with short days and closed high trails. Choose summer if you want hiking, the Morskie Oko walk and the full Tatra trail network. Choose September if you can, since the trails are open, the days are still long enough and the Kasprowy Wierch cable car is running. The Zakopane travel guide covers the town in detail, and the Poland guide covers the rest of Poland.

The sources here are Tatra National Park (TPN), the cable car operator PKL and the official Zakopane site. Seasonal rules in the mountains change, so use the dates as a guide and check the park's tourist notice before each hike.

What changes between the seasons

Zakopane is a town at the foot of the highest mountains in Poland, and the official Zakopane site describes the Tatras as the highest range in the country and the highest massif in the Carpathians. Tatra National Park maintains a trail network of 275 km, according to the town's site. In summer almost all of it is walkable. In winter, the park closes certain trail sections from 1 December to 15 May, including the route from the Five Polish Ponds valley through Świstówka Roztocka to Morskie Oko, and the park publishes avalanche and winter-conditions notices.

The town changes too. In summer the pedestrian street Krupówki fills with visitors, terraces open and the mountains are the main event. In winter the town is about slopes, sleigh rides and warm interiors. The official site lists sleigh rides, called kuligi, with a bonfire and regional food, as a favorite winter activity, and its sports calendar names events such as the Zakopane Cup in alpine skiing.

Typical daily highs run around 20 degrees Celsius in July and August and around freezing in December and January. Mountain weather is more volatile than those averages suggest, so layers and rain gear matter in every season.

Summer: hiking, Morskie Oko and long days

Summer is the season for the trail network. The Morskie Oko road is open, parking tickets are sold online and the park's e-buses run on a published timetable, as described in Morskie Oko from Zakopane. The Kasprowy Wierch cable car runs on its high-season schedule, with online fares priced by the hour, and the Gubałówka funicular has a summer band too; both are compared under costs and booking below.

The costs of summer are crowds and logistics. The park names May holidays, school vacation, public holidays and good-weather weekends as peak days at Morskie Oko, with traffic jams and full parking. If you plan to hike on a summer weekend, start early, buy parking and entry tickets in advance and have a backup valley in mind. Every trail is closed from dusk to dawn from 1 March to 30 November, so long days are an advantage.

Summer also suits the town's culture. The official site lists festivals ranging from jazz to mountain folklore and literature, plus museums such as the Tatra Museum, which suit a cloudy afternoon. Zakopane offers swimming pools and indoor activities for the days when the clouds sit on the peaks.

Winter: snow, sleigh rides and short days

Winter turns Zakopane into a ski town. PKL lists ski routes and chair lifts at Kasprowy Wierch, a ski lift at Gubałówka and a seasonal ski pass, and the official site also lists ice rinks and swimming pools. The cable car to Kasprowy Wierch carries visitors to just below the 1,987 m summit, and the park says it stops in strong wind, icing and at temperatures below minus 28 degrees Celsius. Hikers should check conditions for each route and take avalanche information seriously; the park publishes an avalanche notice and a winter safety guide.

Winter has limits. Days are short, so plan to be off the trail before dark. The park's e-bus service to Morskie Oko is suspended in winter, so reaching the lake means a long walk on the road, if it is open. Sections of trails are closed from 1 December to 15 May. Some high-altitude routes need crampons, ice axes and experience, which are beyond a casual visitor's plan. Local guides and the park's safety rules are the right starting point.

For a first winter visit, choose a gentle plan: a ski day on a beginner slope, a sleigh ride, a walk along Krupówki and an afternoon at one of the town's swimming pools. Where to stay in Zakopane compares the center, the Kuźnice side, the hillside and Kościelisko for winter use.

The shoulder months

May and November are the awkward months. The park says the cable car stops for its annual inspection in those months, and in 2026 the operator lists a closure from 19 October to 6 November. Some trail sections remain closed until 15 May, and the days in November are short. These months suit visitors who want the town, the museums and the low season rather than the high mountains.

June is green and long. September and early October are the usual favorites: the summer crowds are thinner, the cable car runs until its autumn break, and the forests turn color. The dusk-to-dawn trail closure still applies until 30 November, so plan to be down before sunset. If you can choose only one window, a September weekday is the safest bet.

Costs and booking

The park charges the same entry ticket in every season, 11 zł for a day, with reduced fares and free entry for children up to 7; the full list is in Morskie Oko from Zakopane. Lift and cable car fares move with the season. PKL lists the Kasprowy Wierch adult return at 129 zł online in the low season of 1 October to 18 December 2026, compared with 99 to 165 zł online in the high season, which ran from 4 June to 30 September depending on the hour. The Gubałówka funicular's adult return was 37 zł online in the low season and 44 zł in the high season.

Lodging follows the same logic, with prices rising for the winter holidays and the peak of summer. Book early for those dates and compare flexible-cancellation rates. If your dates are open, September is cheaper and quieter. The where to stay in Zakopane guide explains which base suits each season.

Three sample plans

A three-day winter plan: day one for Krupówki, the Tatra Museum and an evening sleigh ride with a bonfire; day two for the Gubałówka funicular and a beginner slope or a walk along the ridge; day three for Kasprowy Wierch if the wind and the notices allow it. Keep a flexible slot for a swimming pool if the weather turns.

A three-day summer plan: day one for Morskie Oko, with parking or the bus booked ahead; day two for the Kościeliska Valley or the Chochołowska Valley, with cash for the latter; day three for the town, the museums and the Gubałówka funicular. Start every hike early and be off the trail before dusk.

A three-day September plan mixes the two: Morskie Oko on a weekday, a day on Kasprowy Wierch while the cable car still runs and a slow day in town. Check the autumn closure dates above before you fix the order, since the cable car is out of service for almost three weeks in 2026.

Who should skip which season

Skip winter if you are mainly a hiker, if you dislike driving on snowy roads or if you want to see Morskie Oko by the usual route. Skip summer if you want to avoid weekend crowds, if heat or thunderstorms worry you or if you plan to rely on parking at the trailhead without booking. Skip both May and November if the cable car is the reason you are coming.

If you are traveling with children, winter suits sleigh rides and short outdoor sessions, while summer suits easy valley walks and the town's family attractions.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is planning a high-mountain route in winter without checking the avalanche notice. The second is assuming the Morskie Oko road is the same in every season. The third is booking the cable car for the week of its autumn closure. The fourth is bringing a dog; Tatra National Park does not allow dogs on its trails.

The last is skipping insurance. Mountain activities carry risk in every season, and many basic policies exclude winter sports or hiking at altitude. Save the rescue numbers 985 or +48 601 100 300, or 112, and read the travel insurance guide to compare cover. For data on the trail and in the town, the Europe eSIM roundup compares plans, and the visa checker covers entry rules for your passport.

Once the season is chosen, plan the days with where to stay in Zakopane and Morskie Oko from Zakopane, and look at the Carpathian Mountains guide if you want to extend the trip toward the Pieniny and the Bieszczady.

FAQ

Is Zakopane better in winter or summer?

Summer is better for hiking and Morskie Oko, winter for skiing and sleigh rides. If you can choose, September is the safest compromise: trails are open and the cable car runs before its autumn break.

Is Zakopane worth visiting in winter if you do not ski?

Yes, for sleigh rides with a bonfire, museums, swimming pools and Krupówki in the snow. Keep a gentle plan, since high trails need winter gear and the park publishes avalanche notices.

Which trails close in winter in the Tatras?

Tatra National Park lists closed sections from 1 December to 15 May, including the route from the Five Polish Ponds valley via Świstówka Roztocka to Morskie Oko. Check the park's tourist notice before every hike.

When is the Kasprowy Wierch cable car closed?

It stops for annual maintenance in May and November, and in 2026 the operator lists 19 October to 6 November. It also does not run in strong wind, icing or below minus 28 degrees Celsius.

Is Zakopane expensive in summer or winter?

Lift fares move with the season: the Kasprowy Wierch adult return is listed at 129 zł online from 1 October to 18 December 2026 and from 99 to 165 zł in the high season. Lodging peaks in holiday weeks.
