Ayacucho is a city in the south-central Peruvian Andes, at about 2,761 meters above sea level. It is the capital of Ayacucho Region. Its historic center is built around the Plaza Mayor, where the Cathedral Basilica stands on the east side. The city is nicknamed the City of Churches for its many colonial temples, and its colonial mansions have balconies that stand out in the old streets.
Ayacucho suits travelers who want history, handcrafts and local food more than beaches or nightlife. The city is known for retablos, painted wooden boxes with Andean scenes, and for Huamanga stone carvings. Puca picante, the signature dish, is a stew of small potatoes, ground peanuts, pork, beetroot and red chili. The climate is temperate and dry, and the rainy season runs from November to March, so the drier months from April to October are the easier time to visit. Two or three days covers the center and the museums, and the Wari ruins are a short distance away.
