Panamá Viejo
Historic site

Old Panama

Explore Panama Viejo, the ruins of Panama City’s first settlement, with a museum, cathedral remains and tower views across the site.

Old Panama, or Panama Viejo, is the archaeological site of Panama City’s first Spanish settlement, founded in 1519 on the Pacific coast. Walk among colonial-era walls and the remains of the cathedral, set in a leafy park, then climb the main tower for views across the ruins to the modern skyline. The museum provides useful context before you explore. Guided tours are available, or you can follow the interpretive trail on your own. It is distinct from Casco Viejo, the city’s later old quarter.

The first Panama City

Old Panama

Panama Viejo is the site of the original Spanish settlement, founded in 1519. It was the first European settlement on the Pacific coast of the Americas. The early city became a starting point for Spanish expeditions into the Inca Empire.

The settlement was later attacked by the pirate Henry Morgan and destroyed in the 17th century. The city was moved to the area now known as Casco Viejo. Panama Viejo and Casco Viejo are separate places, each tied to a different stage in Panama City’s history.

Ruins, museum and tower

The archaeological site preserves the remains of the original city, including a cathedral and other structures. A self-guided interpretive trail winds through the ruins, and guided tours are also available. Begin at the museum to get historical context before walking the grounds.

The main tower is a prominent stop within the site. Climb it for a broad view over the ruins and toward Panama City’s modern skyline. The contrast between the old settlement and the high-rise city is visible from the grounds as well.
