Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, far north of mainland Norway. Longyearbyen, its only town, is where most visitors start: the airport, hotels, shops and most tour operators are there. The islands are known for glaciers that reach the sea, mountains cut by fjords and wildlife that includes polar bears, reindeer, Arctic foxes and seabirds. Coal mining built the settlements, and old mine sites are still visible around them.
Most trips mix boat cruises along the coast, hikes into the valleys and glacier visits. Polar bears are the main safety concern, so trips outside town usually go with a guide. Summer brings the midnight sun, with daylight around the clock for weeks. Winter brings the polar night, when there is little or no daylight. From late winter into spring you can see northern lights and take snowmobile or dog sled trips. Plan at least three or four days. A week leaves room for a boat trip, a hike and a winter activity.

How many days do you need in Longyearbyen?
Three to four nights cover one guided trip into the field and a walk around town. Weather can delay flights, so leave a spare day if you can. Two nights work if you only want town and a short boat trip.
Is Svalbard worth visiting?
Yes, for glaciers, wildlife and light that changes with the season. It is far north, so trips cost more than on the mainland and weather often decides the plan.
Where should I stay in Longyearbyen?
The town center suits a first visit, since shops and restaurants are within walking distance. Nybyen, on the hill above town, is quieter and has wide views. Book early for spring and summer.
When is the best time to visit Svalbard?
March and April suit skiing, with the sun back and snow on the ground. June to August bring the midnight sun for hiking. November to February bring polar night and a chance of northern lights.
Can you see polar bears from Longyearbyen?
Not usually from the town itself. Most visitors see them on a boat or snowmobile trip outside the settlement, led by a guide who carries a firearm.
