Ålesund is a town in Møre og Romsdal county on Norway's west coast and the administrative centre of Ålesund Municipality. The town centre sits on the islands of Hessa, Aspøya and Nørve, and the built-up area reaches onto Uksenøya and Sula. Most visitors come for the Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) architecture, which is unusually consistent. Most of the buildings went up between 1904 and 1907, after a fire on the night of 23 January 1904 destroyed almost the whole town.
Residents fled with minutes' notice, and only one person died. Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany sent four warships with materials for temporary shelters, and the town was rebuilt in stone and brick. The Norwegian Centre of Art Nouveau Architecture covers the fire, the rebuilding and Art Nouveau in Norway and Europe. Sunnmøre Museum, an open-air folk museum, has more than 55 old houses moved to its site. Winters are wet and windy with mild temperatures, so pack rain gear.
