Ometepe is an island in Lake Nicaragua, the large freshwater lake in southwest Nicaragua. Two volcanoes, Concepción and Maderas, rise from the island and are joined by a narrow strip of land that gives it a figure-eight shape. It is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and is reached by ferry from the mainland.
Hiking is the main reason to go. Maderas is the shorter climb and ends at a crater lake. Concepción is longer and steeper and starts early. The island also has pre-Columbian petroglyphs, and coffee and farming shape daily life. Ometepe suits travelers who want nature, simple lodging and a slow pace. The dry season, roughly December to April, is the most reliable time to hike. Two or three nights covers one volcano and time on the lake shore; add nights to climb both.
