Dunedin sits at the head of Otago Harbour on the southeast coast of New Zealand's South Island. Scottish settlers founded it in 1848, and many nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century buildings remain, among them Dunedin Railway Station. The University of Otago brings a large student population to the city center. The center is compact, so most sights are easy to reach on foot.

Most visitors come for the Otago Peninsula, a short drive from the city. The Royal Albatross Centre at Taiaroa Head and penguin colonies are the main draws for wildlife watchers. Plan a half day or a full day for the peninsula, and book tours ahead in summer, from December to February, when days are longest and visitor numbers peak. Dunedin suits a short city break or a few days on the South Island.
