International Antarctic Centre

Explore the International Antarctic Centre near Christchurch Airport, with rescued little blue penguins, a simulated storm and Hägglund rides.

Near Christchurch Airport, the International Antarctic Centre brings the continent’s wildlife, exploration and extreme weather into an interactive attraction. See rescued little blue penguins, learn about huskies and Antarctic research, and explore displays on polar expeditions. The Storm Experience recreates the cold and wind of a snowstorm, while a 4D film takes you on an Antarctic journey. For a bumpier taste of travel on the ice, add a ride in a Hägglund all-terrain vehicle. It works well for families and anyone interested in the science and history of Antarctica.

Antarctica on Christchurch’s doorstep

International Antarctic Centre

Christchurch is one of the gateway cities for Antarctic research, and the centre introduces visitors to that connection through displays and interactive experiences. Its exhibits cover exploration and life on the icy continent, with films and information about the people, equipment and conditions involved in polar journeys.

The centre is close to Christchurch Airport, so it can fit into a day that includes airport travel. A baggage storage room is available, which can be useful if you are visiting between flights or before heading to the airport.

Experiences built around the ice

The Storm Experience gives you a short, indoor taste of Antarctic weather. Cold, wind and noise recreate the feel of a harsh storm; coats are provided for the experience. An igloo gives younger visitors a place to shelter during the simulation.

The 4D film adds wind and occasional sea spray to its Antarctic journey. It combines entertainment with information about the continent and its exploration. The displays also introduce the challenging environments and conditions that shape travel and research in Antarctica.

Wildlife and travel on the ice

The Penguin Encounter is home to rescued little blue penguins. You can watch them at close range and learn about the centre’s penguin rescue work. The Husky Zone introduces visitors to the dogs and their care.

A Hägglund ride gives a sense of how an all-terrain Antarctic vehicle handles uneven ground. The short course includes steep sections and rough terrain, so expect a jolting ride. Height restrictions apply to the ride, and at least one young visitor was unable to take part because they were too short. Check the current requirements when booking if you are visiting with children.
