The Frisian Islands are five islands off the north coast of the Netherlands: Texel, Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland and Schiermonnikoog. Texel lies off North Holland; the other four sit off Friesland. They separate the North Sea from the Wadden Sea, a shallow tidal area and UNESCO World Heritage Site. At low tide the mudflats draw birds on migration, and the dunes along the outer coasts give walkers and beachgoers room to spread out.
Each island has its own character. Texel is the largest and mixes farmland, woods and a long beach. Vlieland and Schiermonnikoog are the quietest, and cars are kept out for most visitors. Terschelling and Ameland combine dunes, villages and cycling routes. Bikes are the usual way to get around most of the islands. Summer is the busiest and warmest season; spring and early autumn suit walkers and cyclists who want fewer crowds. Every island is reached by its own ferry, so seeing several takes extra time.

Which Frisian island is best?
Texel for a big, varied first visit, Terschelling for beach and events, Vlieland and Schiermonnikoog for quiet. Choose by harbor first, since each sails from a different mainland port.
How do you get to the Dutch Wadden islands?
By ferry. TESO runs Den Helder to Texel, Doeksen runs Harlingen to Terschelling and Vlieland, and Wagenborg runs to Ameland and Schiermonnikoog. Check each timetable before you book rooms.
Do you need to book the ferry?
It depends on the island. TESO says you cannot make a reservation for Texel, while Wagenborg expects visitors to buy tickets online or at machines and bicycles need a reservation. Check each operator.
Can you visit a Wadden island as a day trip?
Yes, from the nearest harbor, but crossing times and timetables leave little island time. One or two nights give a better experience.
When is the best time to visit the Frisian Islands?
June to September for beaches and warm days, May and September for quieter dunes. Winter is windy and many services close.
