Eindhoven is a city in the southeast of North Brabant, in the Netherlands, and the largest city in its province. It is the fifth-largest city in the country and the largest outside the Randstad. The city is known as a technology hub and is home to Philips and DAF. Its nickname, City of Light, traces back to Philips' start as a lamp factory in 1891. Air raids in World War II destroyed large parts of the city, and postwar rebuilding left a mostly modern centre, with some older buildings surviving behind newer facades.

Go to Eindhoven for design, modern art and industrial history. The Van Abbemuseum holds works by Picasso, Kandinsky, Mondriaan and Chagall. The Design Academy Eindhoven sits in the former Philips factory known as the Witte Dame. Strijp-S, the old Philips factory complex, now mixes culture, housing and light art. Stratumseind is a dense row of bars and clubs and a main nightlife street. Dutch Design Week runs in October. Late spring to early autumn suits walking and cycling, since winters are cooler and frost is common.

Eindhoven in five

  1. Plan the Van Abbemuseum for a Tuesday to SundayThe Van Abbemuseum (Stratumsedijk 2) lists Tuesday to Sunday hours, 11:00 to 17:00, and sells tickets in its own ticket shop. Monday needs a different plan.Van Abbemuseum
  2. Book early if Dutch Design Week is your tripDutch Design Week fills Eindhoven with exhibitions at venues across the city once a year. Check the official dates before you book, because rooms are scarce around them.
  3. Walk Strijp-S for the industrial sideStrijp-S is the former Philips industrial area, now used for design studios, cafes and events. It is an unscripted wander rather than a ticketed sight; check what is open on the day.
  4. Fly into Eindhoven only if the fare is rightEindhoven Airport handles low-fare flights, but Schiphol has more routes and direct trains. Compare the whole journey, not just the ticket price, before you choose.
  5. Split Amsterdam to Maastricht hereEindhoven sits on the NS network between Utrecht and Maastricht, so a night here splits a long day. Check the route on 9292 for your date.Southeast planner

Eindhoven FAQ

Is Eindhoven worth visiting?

Yes, if you like modern design, technology history and a city without canal-postcard crowds. It is weaker for a classic old-town stroll, which Maastricht does better.

What is Eindhoven known for?

Design and technology: the Van Abbemuseum for modern art, Strijp-S, the former Philips industrial area, and Dutch Design Week. Football fans know the city through PSV.

How many days do you need in Eindhoven?

One to two days cover the Van Abbemuseum, Strijp-S and the center. Three days make sense only around Dutch Design Week or if you add Maastricht and Nijmegen.

Is the Van Abbemuseum open on Mondays?

No. The museum lists Tuesday to Sunday hours, 11:00 to 17:00. Check its own site for holidays and exhibition changes.

Is Eindhoven a good airport for the Netherlands?

It works for low-fare flights and for the south. For Amsterdam, Utrecht and the west, Schiphol usually saves time on the ground.
