Vondelpark

Explore Vondelpark in Amsterdam, with leafy paths, ponds and picnic lawns. Visit in spring for tulips or from May to September for open-air shows.

Vondelpark is Amsterdam’s best-known city park, a 47-hectare green space near the Museum Quarter and Leidseplein. Follow its paths past ponds, lawns, gardens and sculptures, or bring a blanket for a picnic. You can also cycle, visit a playground or stop at one of the park’s cafés. From May to September, the open-air theatre hosts live performances; tulips bloom in spring. The park opened in 1865 and was declared a national monument in 1996.

A public park since 1865

Vondelpark opened in 1865 under the name Nieuwe Park. It took its present name after a statue of the Dutch poet and playwright Joost van den Vondel was placed here in 1867. The park covers about 47 hectares in Amsterdam’s Oud-Zuid district, close to the Museum Quarter and Leidseplein.

In 1996, Vondelpark was declared a national monument. Its grounds combine open lawns with ponds, gardens, bridges and paths. Mature trees and varied plant life give the park a different pace from the surrounding streets.

Paths, ponds and sculptures

Walking and cycling are among the easiest ways to explore. Paths lead past water, lawns and wooded areas, with playgrounds and places to stop along the way. You can bring a book or picnic blanket and settle on the grass, or take a break at one of the cafés and restaurants inside the park.

Look out for the statue of Joost van den Vondel and the park’s sculptures. One work by Pablo Picasso is often called “The Fish,” though it depicts a bird. The park also has tennis courts and an open-air theatre. Its grounds suit both a short walk between city sights and a longer visit focused on fresh air and outdoor activities.

Spring flowers and summer performances

April and May are the months to look for tulips in bloom. In warmer months, the open-air theatre hosts live concerts and performances; the season runs from May to September. Check the theatre schedule before you go if a show is part of your plan.

For a quieter walk, early morning and evening are good times to visit. On a sunny day, bring a blanket and make time to linger on the lawns. Families can use the playgrounds, while the paths are popular with walkers, runners and cyclists.

Vondelpark is close to several major museums. The Van Gogh Museum is about 1 km away, and the Rijksmuseum is about 1.3 km away. Leidseplein is also nearby, so the park can fit between museum visits or provide a slower stop after time indoors.
